Raffle Ticket for artwork by Rosa Glaessner Novak
Being Contradicting and Nonsynchronous, 1 | clay, glaze, Detroit River sand | 6”x7”x2.5”
“There is nothing more unexpected, nothing more dangerous than this power of being at once fiery and puny, contradicting and nonsynchronous. The workers are no longer alone with themselves and the bosses. Many earlier forces, from quite a different Below, are beginning to slip between.”
In his 1935 Heritage of our Times, Ernst Bloch wrote on the existence of a “Now” that must “carry earlier things.” He wrote about a kind of “multispatial” and “polyphonous” dialectic, complicated by its relationship to different space-times. The past, present, and future tumble along the spiral of a “contradicting and nonsynchronous” struggle. As they get close to one another on their orbit, they multiply each other—the force of past struggle enters the present, the force of the present, the future.
Why do you support A-B Projects?
“As both a past participant and lead artist, I have so much appreciation for the role of A-B Projects in the ceramics community. It is an essential artist-run social space for our field, where we can stretch our ideas, our work, ourselves, and what “ceramics” might be!” - Rosa Glaessner Novak, Lead Artist (and long time participant) for State of Ceramics and Studio Sessions.
Rosa Glaessner Novak works across ceramic practice, archival research, and art book publishing. She is currently completing her PhD in the History of Art at the University of Michigan, where her research focuses on histories of clay workers’ labor organizing.
